She left the pathetic, wretched, Groot in the firm grip of the men. They had precise instructions. Hold him for the night in an upper-level apartment. Break his spirit. Deliver him in the morning to the Fugger legal offices, where a team of her personally selected lawyers would open him up like surgeons.

Ida moved purposefully through the wide hallways of the high-class center. She passed ornately decorated bars, with patrons quietly holding elaborate cocktails in front of their eyes. She came to a broad expanse of marble steps, stopped, and looked up. She reached a balcony overlooking the night skyline. Two-person tables were spread across the area. All of them filled. City types relaxing, eyeing one another. She saw what she was looking for. She weaved her way past tables and sat down.

“How did it go?” Krass asked. He had a tall glass of beer in front of him and a cigarette smoldering in the ashtray.

“You did good work.”

“Thanks. You smoke?”

She answered him with a cold glare. “P. found a gem in you.”

“Ha. A racketeer like Groot ain’t hard to find. They crave the spotlight as much as they crave the sterling. It took three telephone calls. When you exist in the muck of this city, like I do, someone like Groot was easy. Can’t help themselves. Finishes one scam and needs to feed on another.”

“With P. indisposed, for now, I want you to report directly to me. Quietly, though.”

“Well, thanks. I’ll take that as a huge compliment.”

“It’s not because he trusted you. P. is not great in figuring out who to trust, but you have a nice win on your scorecard.”

“How is he? I miss him.”

“He’s not good. On a boat, going to a dangerous place. I want him back. That’s why I wanted to talk tonight. Groot was only the first step. This will clear P.’s name of any wrongdoing, at least. Incompetency, dumbness, is another thing, but he won’t be hanged for that. There’s a bigger game here. P. is on the boat as a blood sacrifice demanded by Vandergrift. He knew it would hurt me. A sick power play, to show me what he can do, his naked power. He thought I’d waver. I didn’t. This Templar episode must be utterly destroyed. Give Vandergrift what he wants. Make sure there’s no reason for P. to be over there. That’s done, yes. But that won’t be the end of it, because after that it will be Vandergrift.”

“I’m going to like you a lot more than Pierre for sure.” He fingered the cigarette. “Don’t worry. We’ll have him back before you miss him. This Templar thing is going to be a false start.”

“Good, but don’t forget. Keep your mind on Vandergrift. Every speck of power he has, I want it.”
